Next door to the Drumhellers was the Woolen Mills Public School. Roy Baltimore recalls:
Mrs. Wilkes used to designate certain boys to cut switches for her, because that ground behind the schoolhouse was grown up in little saplings. Designate certain ones to cut switches. And, if you got too far out of line she used them. And she used them pretty heavily on one of those boys from around Hog Wallow, and the boy’s mother complained to the school system, Albemarle County school system. And they investigated it.
